“Tunnel Tigers” belong to an elite group of construction workers who specialize in a highly paid but dangerous profession: driving tunnels through mountains or underneath rivers or other large bodies of water, on locations as far apart as Sydney, Australia, and San Francisco. At the turn of the last century, they tunneled out the subways under New York and London; in the 1930s, they worked on the Holland Lincoln tunnels that link New York and New Jersey and in the 1040s and 195s , they were involved in a score of huge hydroelectric tunnels in the Highlands of Scotland.
