"Buttons & Beads: Lenape Princess Wynonah and the Future President"
Wednesday, May 30th 7:00 PM

Local Author Gretchen Hardy will speak about her new book"Buttons & Beads: Lenape Princess Wynonah and the Future President."
She will speak to the Lenape women’s lives that were full of activity — cooking, gardening, tanning, pottery, sewing, basket weaving. They enjoyed autonomy. They could choose a husband and divorce by placing his clothes outside the dwelling. Children belonged to the mother as did the house, field harvest, and family belongings. Women were the Keepers of Sacreds: wampum beads, seeds for planting, and medicines to safeguard health.

Lenape culture was based on nurturing, protecting and respecting Life. Women decided which braves could go to war and which captives would be killed, saved or adopted. Women were seen as wise, powerful and good. They had pivotal roles in politics, medicine and spiritual matters. Native American women’s independence was centuries ahead of their European counterparts.

The program is free and open to the public. Her book will be available for signing.

Who’s Who in Schuylkill County In the 20th Century???
There is presently no updated county biographical publication covering the twentieth century. The Historical Society is working toward remedying that by compiling a biographical data base of Schuylkill Countians. We are asking for your help with this project. Nothing has been compiled in over seventy years. Generations of biographical history may be lost if we do not set out to capture what we can before it is too late.
